Antioxidants and Cancer -
Worldwide Research
It is good to be able to report that, apart from the
huge amount of general cancer research in progress which has already
made substantial advances into our understanding of the subject a
great deal f research specifically into the question of free radicals
and cancer is under way. Many trials, sponsored by the American
Institute for Cancer Research, are in progress to discover the role of
dietary factors, including vitamins C and E, in the development of
cancer. In Britain, too, much research is in progress. The Imperial
Cancer Research Fund, the Medical Research Council, the Dunn Nutrition
Unit and the Department of Community Medicine at Cambridge University,
among many other authorities, are engaged in long-term studies,
involving thousands of subjects, into the effect of dietary elements
on the incidence of cancer. Huge similar projects are also under way
in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and
Greece.
